What is causing my boiler to make noises?

Did you know that even when boilers are in great working condition, they can start making noises? These noises are often caused by certain components inside your boiler or are simply indicating signs that your boiler is in need of a repair. 


The common causes of a noisy boiler:

  • Build up of limescale
  • Air blockage
  • Low water pressure
  • Overheating
  • Insufficient water flow
  • Types of noises to look out for

Clunking and Banging

When there is a build of of limescale in your central heating system, it leads to a blockage. This blockage then leads to an increase pressure in your boiler, causing clunking and banging noises. You need to make sure when you hear this type of noise, you get your boiler looked into straight away as it could become unsafe for you and your family. 

Whistling Noises

This is often caused by trapped air and can be easily fixed by hiring a professional to bleed your radiators. Try too also look out for cold spots on your radiators which is another sign which indicates there is trapped air in your heating system.

Gurgling Noises

Gurgling noises are also caused by trapped air, blockages or even a frozen condensate pipes. When you hear this type of noise from your boiler we suggest hiring a qualified heating engineer to carry out a powerflushing service. 

Vibrating Noises

This often indicates there are loose compontents within the heating system that need tightening. if it is the brackets, you will be able to do it yourself but you do need to get in touch with a heating engineer to give you a full diagnosis.
