We understand just how frustrating it can be to have your boiler break down on you. When people call us saying they need our help, we understand they want to have their boiler back up and running as soon as possible.
Has your boiler stopped working? Here's what to check
Sometimes, you don't need our services to get your boiler working again. There are a few things you can first eliminate as possibilities. If you don't have heat or hot water in your home, here are a few things you can check before you have to call out a heating engineer.
- Make sure the boiler's power is turned on.
- Verify that the programmer is reading the proper time.
- Ensure that the room thermostat is turned on and set to heat.
- Verify that the electric metre has enough credit.
- Check to see if the gas metre has enough credit.
- Check to see if the gas metre is turned on.
If none of these things are causing the problem and you still don't have hot water or heat, check the boiler pressure on pressurised systems. When the system is cool, the pressure on the pressure gauge should be around 1 bar. The boiler may not work if the pressure is less than 0.5 bars. We do not propose topping up the pressure if it is low without first examining the expansion vessel, which can only be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
When you need an engineer
Please note if you've checked for all of the above and still can't make any progress, you'll need a Gas Safe registered engineer. It's a legal requirement for anyone carrying out work on gas boilers to be Gas Safe registered and for very good reasons. Unfortunately, gas boiler maintenance is not a DIY job. If tampered with by someone who doesn't have the proper training and experience, gas boilers can leak and cause a range of nasty consequences. For more information about the importance of gas safety, please check out the Gas Safe register website.
